Peter Cairns was lucky not to lose an eye when he was attacked by his ex-girlfriend Melissa Connolly, said doctors. She admitted causing malicious wounding when she appeared at Preston Crown Court, last Friday and will be sentenced later. Connolly, 43, attacked Mr Cairns after he made several attempts to leave her home in Barrow, Cumbria, on the night of October 20 of last year.
